Throughout the entire bible I can see an expression of the Father’s desire. He wants communion, unbroken fellowship with His creation. He made us, created and fashioned us for one-thing…continual communion and fellowship with the Father.
One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple. (Psalm 27:4)
From the garden in Genesis to the New Jerusalem in Revelations the Father is speaking to every one of us…I want to be one with you!
“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; (John 17:20)
that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. (John 17:21)
And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: (John 17:22)
When you hear the voice of God through the Old Testament you can look at the prophets and what their message was to the Kings and to Israel. Continually they would speak to the people describing His Plan and how to get there. One prophet, Amos, has a vision exclaiming the zeal the Lord has for His altar (House of Prayer)
Amos 9:1 I saw the Lord standing upon –(establishing – setting ) the altar
Not only is He zealous, He regards it with the utmost care as we should also- He establishes and sets the altar in holiness and righteousness – there is no toleration for wickedness or evil in the midst of the altar. His position of standing is alerting – He has something very important to utter – He is about to prophesy – He has the attention of Amos the prophet
He is giving direction
V1 (continues) and he said, Smite the lintel of the door that the posts may shake
For the posts of the door to shake – this is a thunder – this is judgment
Lintel – the place where blood was applied when in the land of Egypt applying the blood of the Passover lamb (is it possible there was no blood applied to the lintel of this house where the altar was established) in Deut 6:9 Moses encouraged the Israelites to write the divine commands on the posts of their house – maybe there was no word there – the Lord struck there – thundered there- the idea was this was a religious rite or ceremony that was a symbol of protection to the household
We are only righteous – can stand before the Lord by way of the blood of the Lamb and the word of God is what protects and keeps us right with God if we will obey and give it first place
Perhaps judgment was coming because there were those who had left these principles = signifying we must keep our place under the blood – in right standing with God and focusing our life on the principles of His word- letting it be a guard over our heart keeping us from evil
In many traditions the thought in Jerusalem is the lintel keeps evil out of the house which was the focus of the prophecy – those given the charge to keep evil out had failed and evil had crept in the house and God was taking His place to remove evil – stating throughout the chapter that evil could not hide from Him or His judgments
The weight of this judgment causes my heart to tremble – destruction by way of God’s judgment is coming to the temple because of a people who did not keep their charge…keep their place to protect and drive evil out
Whoa to those who are given this charge – should they leave their post – follow after their own interests – become self seeking – they are likened unto Cushites – those who by way of perversion sought their own pleasures
And likened unto the tribes of Rueben and Gad who given the promise land they discouraged the people from entering in – saying they could not take out the giants – Joshua and Caleb had eyes of faith = they saw the promise land and with eyes of faith they said we can enter in but there were those who tired to discourage Israel from taking the promise land – Numbers 32:14 – Moses rebuked them and they traveled 40 years in the wilderness until the entire generation was removed – God was angry at their acts of discouraging those from what God had promised
So it will be to those who would discourage this generation – saying it is too difficult – naming the giants in the land as reason for not going in to possess the promises
The Lord is provoked over such an attitude – it is comparable to entering into sexual sin as a leader – take Cush who seeing his father naked – looked longingly at him rather than cover him – there was perversion in his heart – he did not deal with sexual immorality and birthed a spirit of perversion and ended up fathering Nimrod – passing on the perversion to a whole other level of violence and destruction
Cush brought forth Nimrod who had no fear of God – the seat of rebellion – he founded Babel which was the building of an empire to reach heaven without God – the tower of Babel = confusion- trying to replenish the earth by way of idolatry – wealth and success without God – breeds the very Babylon spirit which will be the seat of the anti-christ
The Lord is zealous over His house – He will not tolerate wickedness in the leaders – He will not allow evil to be unaccounted for.
Amos prophesies what will come to those in His house who do this evil
V1 cut them in the head and I will slay the last of them with the sword-
they will not escape – he that flees of them shall not flee away and he that escapes of the m shall not be delivered
v2 though they dig into hell….though they climb up to heaven describing He sees all they cannot hide from Him
v3though they hide on the top of Carmel (where there are caves and hiding places) or at the bottom of the sea they can not hide from His sight
v3 I will command the serpent and he shall bite them one translation says evil, cruel and oppressive kings will attack them
I am reminded of a dream Mike Bickle had where Serpents were biting the people – even those in the house of God – those who you would think spend time studying and should know better – yet they were being bitten – falling under judgment – their knowledge of the end times (which was the subject of the dream) was intelligent and interesting but it did not build up faith and it did not cause growth and strengthening to endure the attack
So again the charge to protect and lead this generation – to protect and drive out evil in the land that they could walk into their inheritance is a weighty charge and one God takes so seriously that He will remove and judge those who discourage and do not follow this charge – even by way of sins of omission – Rueben and Gad though the tribes of these leaders did not directly discourage – they also did not encourage or speak that the discouragement was wrong – sins of omission is just as bad. To do nothing to remain silent is just as wrong in God’s eyes.
V4 even those who are held captive – this does not keep the judgment from coming forth from God – the state of your soul can not be your excuse – God can and God will judge by way of the earth (earthquake, destruction, flood
Hearing this prophecy we really don’t know who the evil is until verse 7 calling them like children of the Ethiopians – which is the sons of Cush- saying they are of a spirit of perversion – they satisfy themselves – they tend their own desires – they do not take the place to protect and cover
V8 Behold the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth
You can feel the Lord’ zeal over His house of Israel –He will not allow evil to remain and ruin the house like a poison that spreads – rather He will remove it – V9 like as corn is sifted in a sieve – yet shall not the least grain fall to the earth – and in the midst of judgment and cleansing we can know He will carefully protect His remnant
In verse 10 all the sinners of my people shall die by the sword which say “the evil shall overtake no prevent us” where God calls them “sinners of my people” – this is what He referred to when he spoke of the tribes of Rueben and Gad
I heard the Lord say so He feel s about this generation that if any are to discourage them about that which they must endure or go through and convince them to draw back and not enter in – God views it as sinners of my people – sinning against God and His people – to tear down God in the people’s eyes to say God could not only protect them and that He would not equip them to enter in and to take possession of the land is sin in God’s eyes –
To tolerate immorality, to wink at sin – to not drive evil out of the land and take the charge for all God has for this generation – is sin in His eyes – He will purge the house and remove those who would come against His people – event those who would encourage this generation to draw back – like biting dogs – the Lord will cause the serpents to bite them
V11 In that day will I rasie up the tabernacle of David that is fallen down and close up the breaches and I will raise up his ruins and I will build it as in the days of old
That they may possess the remnant of Edom and of all the heathen which are called by my name saith the Lord who does this.
There is warning to think we know the judgments – that we could call an enemy what God calls a righteous man – no one knows the heart of man except the spirit of God
2 Samuel 4
Saul is dead and the army goes after Saul’s grandsons – calling them an enemy of David – yet David never authorized the attack. In fact David saw god’s sovereign hand of deliverance through all of Saul’s attacks – David never suffered harm – so when the army showed up with the head of Ish-bosheth David was very angry.
Ish-bosheth and Mephibosheth were Jonathan’s son’s and when Jonathan was killed they were the heirs.
Don’t ever think you know God’s enemy by way of association or even family – heritage- culture – you don’t know – you must ask God or have Him reveal to you His enemy – David took great pains to honor his vow to protect Jonathans son’s and what Rechab and Baanah did was great sin
Not only did they kill Ish-bosheth but they took him while he was resting in his home, unarmed, house open – no resistance not even guards. They came in on an assignment that was not authorized by the king and they murdered him
Think not little even of your word so in your heart you commit murder when you hate your brother – be not quick to call a son or grandson of God’s enemy an enemy – hold back on any words of hate or be mindful of your heart towards those once considered God’s enemies – God can change the heart and there can be a work you did not see nor were you aware of …
This follows the False Justice movement – they try to bring justice without God – there is no justice without Jesus and what they call enemies may in actuality not be an enemy of God
The motivation was in actuality saying God would not be able to preserve David – to think little of God is so wrong – it is a slap in God’s face.
Accusing of wrong doing is just as bad – whoa to those who call the righteous – enemies of God
Rechab and Baanah were killed and David made an open display of their sin by hanging their hands and feet before the people as a warning.
It was not merely in obedience to the Divine will that David executed these murderers, it was also politically necessary as well. “To have left them unpunished would have left the impression with the people that David had been involved in a conspiracy to bring about the murder.”F14
A number of able scholars have pointed out the danger of a society’s permitting murder to go unpunished. “When murderers are allowed to live without punishment, the moral fabric of a nation is endangered.”F15 “Nations of the world would do well to learn this lesson regarding the punishment of murderers.”F16
No one will escape God’s judgments – yet the righteous they are called to build the tabernacle, given the restoration ministry to build up the waste places – and inhabit them – plant the vineyard – tend to God’s house – the Lord promises provision and promises wine – promises gardens and fruit – a planting that will not be moved or pulled out a place where the Lord dwells all the days of their life
V13 Behold the days come that the plowman shall overtake the reaper and the one who treads the grapes them that sow seed and the mountains shall drop sweet wine and the hills shall melt.
“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, And you will be the father of a multitude of nations. (Gen 17:4)
He has made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt. (Genesis 45:8)
